This book covers cases in the Calderdale area of Yorkshire from 1802 to 2002. Calderdale is the most southerly of the Yorkshire Dales and the local council is called Calderdale. The River Calder flows along the valley but it does not flow through the main town of Halifax. The town is unusual as it used to use a gibbet to execute thieves until the 30th April 1650 when it was used to decapitate Abraham Wilkinson and Anthony Mitchell. Wilkinson had stolen some cloth and Mitchell had stolen 2 horses. Between 1358 and 1650 56 men and women were executed by this means. It stopped when Oliver Cromwell said the practice must stop and cases were to be sent to the Assizes held at York.
